Revenge Plays

ON MODERN PLAYS - by G.L. Horton

In reply to RN's post on ICWP-L@LISTS.NETSPACE.ORG

IMHO, almost all the cop or action movies or TV shows are revenge plays. The episode of Law & Order SVU I was too tired and depressed to turn off last night, for instance: nerdy serial killer taunts police with clue-puzzles, is caught, during questioning hero cop goes berserk and attacks him; psychologist deduces perp is acting out vengeance against his probably abusive mother (whom he has not seen in 25 years) cops find Mom, bring her in, she abuses perp, who attacks her (vengeance) shouting out a confession "I'm a famous criminal, are you satisfied now!" Happy ending b/c Mom is injured and humiliated, cops got away w/ torture, and perp will be executed or sent to the hell of prison where as we are shown episode after episode prisoners and guards constantly torture each other in an atmosphere of total iron-hearted terror.

This is the third prime-time cop show this week that featured a Good Guy beating a suspect under interrogation w/o regret or sanction. We teach bloody instructions.

Some intelligent liberal kind-hearted idealistic playwrights I used to know when they were young and unsuccessful write these Morality tales that endorse evil in the name of law and order. (4/25/05)
