As You Like It & Love's Labours Lost

ON SHAKESPEARE - by G.L. Horton (4/20/02)

On the humanities.lit.authors.shakespeare newsgroup list, SF writes: Antonio in Merchant of Venice. And "patience on a monument" is Viola's line from 12th Night.

AYLI isn't a favorite of mine, but I've seen at least a dozen productions of it-- so it must be among many people's favorites. It is very beautiful, but a bit bland, and what directors do to counteract the blandness tends to piss me off. A nymphomanical Phoebe, for instance. Or set it in Toy Town, with hobbyhorses, or on a South Sea Island, with cannibals.

OTOH, LLL is a favorite of mine, and I've seen 5 productions, all good, two very very good indeed-- as is the BBC video.
