Boston 2006 Theatre Season
Bare of Women

ON WOMEN'S ISSUES - by G.L. Horton

M—I'm moved/upset by your statement that you've "given up". It's going to take me a while to mull over the implications of your writing books but not sending out your plays-- but I was struck to the heart by your words.

PG, thanks for the encouragement to kvetch. I've been fuming for the last month b/c our Boston companies have announced their 2006 seasons and they are almost all bare of women writers/directors. Even female acting roles are in short supply! A great falling-off from the toe-hold we females thought we'd gained in the last 20 years through a combination of talent, hard work, and political pressure. And in response to this? Not a word of complaint anywhere. No one seems to have noticed! Have the women who make up the majority of audience, backstage workers, students and gophers decided that we are not worthy? That we should be content to be silent and let men choose our stories, speak for us, cast and direct us, critique us? Have we forgotten so soon? Silence= death! (9/26/05)
