Repertory Success

ON WRITING & DIRECTING - by G.L. Horton

UK writes: New Jersey Repertory Company, premiere Mainstage Season, their first three productions were completely new (I directed one), And our audiences are growing every day. Our script-in-hand new play series (staged readings) are sold out every performance...

This is such an accomplishment!! I know that readings of new plays are fun-- I've been doing them, as audience, actor, director or writer, since college. At Playwrights Platform, we can get wonderful experienced actors to be in the readings-- but sometimes I hesitate to ask them, because in spite of free admission the audience can be as small as 20 people, and is seldom more than 40. Not enough laughers to be a fair test of the jokes!

And as for full productions-- Your success is so heartening! It's axiomatic around here that the way for a small theatre to commit suicide is to schedule a premiere. Nobody comes unless the reviews come out raves, and by then it's too late to meet expenses even if the rest of the run sells out. (07/24/99)
