Talent and Women Playwrights

ON WRITING & DIRECTING - by G.L. Horton

SP wrote: "I also sent the Humana article to express JOY that a woman playwright was being produced to such acclaim."

The Better Angel of my Nature rejoices. Good for Her! and Her, and Her, and especially Kirsten Greenidge, whom I know and whose work I cherish. The selfish devil in me that writes plays, however, is howling with rage. When I was young a playwright had to be male, and preferably a Man of The People, tough, a veteran of WWII or Korea or, eventually, Vietnam. Now working class women who can't afford college can earn tuition by becoming veterans-- they can die in today's Vietnam. Playwrights can be female, but only if when young they become Teacher's Pets at certain elite universities. (4/08/04)
