Geralyn Horton
(HYPATIA, an exotically dressed old woman, is asleep in her
chair in a grotesque posture resembling death, surrounded by a
jumbled pile of papers spilled onto the floor where she dropped
them. PANACEA enters and panics at the sight.)
PANACEA
Hypatia! Oh, my God, Hypatia. Whats happened to you? Please
dont be dead, Hypatia. Please Goddess, dont let her
leave me.
HYPATIA: (waking up)
What? Whats the matter, child?
PANACEA
Thank God! Goddess! All the saints and Powers!
HYPATIA:
Why are you so agitated?
PANACEA
I thought you were wereoh! (flings her arms round
Hypatia)
HYPATIA:
Dont squash me! Im fine! At least as fine as can be
expected, at my age.
PANACEA
I was afraid youd- youd-- . I dont know
what Id do if I didnt have you! (flings her arms
round Hypatia again)
HYPATIA:
Whoa! Cant an old lady take a nap?
PANACEA
But you looked
..
HYPATIA
I dont always appear at my best, these days.
PANACEA
Youre beautiful! You have spiritual beauty, impervious to
time.
HYPATIA
Except when I dont.
PANACEA
I never--!
HYPATIA
I didnt set out to take a nap. It just happened.
PANACEA
Does that happen often?
HYPATIA
Not too often. Depends.
PANACEA
Your spirit was gone, snuffed out, leaving this grotesque ancient
carcass.
HYPATIA
Grotesque, eh?
PANACEA
I suddenly realized: youre not immortal.
HYPATIA
Probably not. Ive lived too long for my death to be a mystical-magical
event. Confucius, Socrates: Theyre the exceptions. The rest
of the Immortals died young.
PANACEA
You deserve immortality. If anyone.
HYPATIA
Immortality takes more than just you believing. And unfortunately,
Id have to die first.
PANACEA
Dont die for a long time, please, Hypatia. I need you.
HYPATIA
I get tired. (pause) Some times its hard to keep my eyes
open. Focused on white pages, particularly.
PANACEA (picking up spilled papers)
These pages, you mean?
HYPATIA
I dropped them when I dropped off.
PANACEA
Oh, dear. Maybe-- maybe you had a minor stroke. A blackout.
HYPATIA
No. I can remember the moment the pages slipped away. Call it
a grayout, dear: glazed eyes sealing over. Yes. I was reading
your Aspirations of Universal Education for A Pantopian Tomorrow.
PANACEA
So. Youll tell me what you think of it, mam?
HYPATIA
Id rather not.
PANACEA
But I need your help, Hypatia! Youre the wise one.
HYPATIA
Wisdom without potencywhat good is it?
PANACEA
Youve inspired me, I hope to inspire
HYPATIA
You know whats inspirational? (holds up page) This!
PANACEA
Thats just a chart.
HYPATIA
Exactly.
PANACEA
Which one?
HYPATIA
The one graphing Ecological meltdown.
PANACEA
Oh, yes. Its such a clear and present danger.
HYPATIA
Only to people who can read charts.
PANACEA
But I explain
HYPATIA
No, you dont.
PANACEA
On the next page
HYPATIA
No one will get it.
PANACEA
On my web page
HYPATIA
Curiosity. Clicking through.
PANACEA
People contact me, they volunteer
HYPATIA
Your chart shows its impossible. Youre not making
converts fast enough.
PANACEA
Oh, God. Why?
HYPATIA
Your blueprint for Pantopia offers mankind the only hope to escape
our man-made doom. You believe.
PANACEA
It isnt a matter of belief, not in the sense of faith.
HYPATIA
Isnt it?
PANACEA
Its science! Though the spiritual sides important,
too.
HYPATIA
How important?
PANACEA
Most important of all. Because most people are innumerate, its
through spiritual means that they must come to understanding.
But Im a scholar. If I believe, its because
this hypothesis adds up, and makes sense and its
the only thing that does! Pantopean practice is just a corollary
to the mathematical analysis.
HYPATIA
So the majority cant follow your reasoning. If they can
get a sort of basic idea its fromwhat? The example
of a role model?
PANACEA
Or from ritual. Or narrative.
HYPATIA
Speaking of: This Aspirations of yours reads like
a cross between a dissertation and an advertisement for Aromatherapy.
PANACEA
It is my dissertation! And Aromatherapy works!
HYPATIA
But thats not how to sell what youre selling, is it?
PANACEA
Im not selling!
HYPATIA
People today are conditioned to be customers.
PANACEA
Its so wrong!
HYPATIA
From birth to burial.
PANACEA
Consuming till it kills them.
HYPATIA
All they know how to do.
PANACEA
Which is why they need me!
HYPATIA
Can you save them if they arent listening?
PANACEA
Then what do you think I should do?
HYPATIA
I'm 80 years old, Panacea. What I think is of no importance.
PANACEA
Then what is--?
HYPATIA
Whats important is the vested interests at stake: all the
rich and powerful people whom you are attacking. They do understand
the math-- or at least their accountants do. What will they think?
PANACEA
They will think Well, they'll realize they've been found
out.
HYPATIA
Then what will they do?
PANACEA
I suppose--
HYPATIA
Are you telling me you hadn't given it thought?
PANACEA
Of course I have. But --
HYPATIA
Well, what response do you hope they'd have? Best case?
PANACEA
Theyd wake up and understand that what they are doing now
endangers everyone, themselves and their own children. So they'd
change. They'd help us do what has to be done.
HYPATIA
How likely would you estimate that response to be?
PANACEA
Maybe one chance out of a thousand.
HYPATIA
Try out of ten thousand. 10,000 click throughs. Next best?
PANACEA
Next best is, they'd think it's all nonsense and just brush it
off, like they do all sorts of attacks, Nader's and Chomsky's
and Batterburys, for instance--
HYPATIA
You think those men are just-- brushed off?
PANACEA
Essentially.
HYPATIA
Meaning no reprisals.
PANACEA
Well, nobody will publish them.
HYPATIA
Wrong. Nobodies will. These authors arent censored completely,
turned into martyrs like the Falun Gong. As intellectuals they
are allowed, they are even encouraged, to publish in specialized
journals where the masses wont see them. There, these ideas
can become passe, losers in the free marketplace, without ever
being debated.
PANACEA
Journalists are such cowards.
HYPATIA
Do you understand why? Our friend Batterbury contends that the
effort to shut him out is whats driving these huge media
mergers.
PANACEA
Thats insane!
HYPATIA
Not at all, not at all insane. But unnecessary.
PANACEA
Those mergers all make sense under my hypothesis
HYPATIA
Massive resources go into neutralizing our friends. Money. Threats.
Regulations enforced or winked at. Only a tiny swerve in the customary
way of doing business. But you, you can break through!
PANACEA
Compared to you, Im a beginner.
HYPATIA
Im old. Im tired. Ive given you all I can: but
now you are the one who must use it.
PANACEA
Now?
HYPATIA
Let me remind you of the oldest secret of all men who are
swift and terrible in response to more familiar threats are slow
to catch on where women are concerned. The techno-geeks are the
worst. Talk about clueless! They are 10 year olds.
PANACEA
But 10s a great age. My nephew
HYPATIA
10 is when boy children are brightest, but also most female-phobic.
Gearing up to break free of their mothers.
PANACEA
But Jason can be so sweet
HYPATIA
Well, by the time Jason is hacking into the defense department,
his peers will have knocked the sweetness out of him. Along with
all the common sense.
PANACEA
You mean the warlords werent born that way.
HYPATIA
Half hormones, half willed incapacity.
PANACEA
In Pantopia, theyll stay sweet.
HYPATIA
But to get there, my dear? To reach the innumerate masses? The
use of such stunted creatures is your best hope.
PANACEA
Creatures such as
?
HYPATIA
Hackers! Hackers rule!
PANACEA
Doing what?
HYPATIA
What works! Promote your role modeling, story telling
PANECEA:
But right now Im tied up in my scholarship!
HYPATIA
Tied up, tied down research is endless, my dear. Youve
done enough. (holds up Aspirations papers)
PANACEA
But with Education Ive just touched on 5 of the 12 crucial
areas
HYPATIA
Enough! 12 for the 12 months, the 12 sun signs, your 12 Apostles!
Let them finish the work, using what youve accomplished
as their guide.
PANACEA
But Ive only 2 Apostles.
HYPATIA
So far. At your present rate of conversion
PANACEA
What should I do, then?
HYPATIA
Let me present a possibility. (kicks bedroll, which groans)
PANACEA
What in the world?!
HYPATIA
We both needed sleep. This one worked 33 hours straight.
PANACEA
One, who?
HYPATIA
Captain Goober. He represents a wild and wonderful opportunity,
I think.
PANACEA
How?
HYPATIA
Ill let him explain. But remember, Goober is an aging little
boy. Hes bound to be unreliable because of this boyish blank
where adult emotion should be. Using geeks means embracing an
extreme symbolism, the only sort his dwarvish kind recognize.
In terms of moral complexity, theyre stuck at Star Wars.
PANACEA
Like what?
HYPATIA
Try thinking Joan of Arc. (shakes bedroll) Goober?
Wake up.
CAPTAIN GOOBER: (turning over)
Lemme lone.
HYPATIA
All hands on deck, Captain. Time to wake up and meet Panacea.
CAPTAIN GOOBER Whats the--? Time to--? Hypatia?
HYPATIA
Come on, get it together. Time to tell this forceful young woman
what you told me.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Shes the big EOB?
PANACEA
EOB?
HYPATIA
Enemy of Bill Gates. Shorthand for all we hate and
fear in the future.
PANACEA
Oh, yes. Absolutely.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
All right! Let me show you what I can do! (sets up laptop)
See, Microsoft wrote this neat program that lets a person using
it look at other computers. Neglected a few of the niceties, though:
like, Security? Accounting? An Audit Trail?
PANACEA (to HYPATIA)
You think this could be used to spread the word?
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Nothing easier! I run this program on my computer, any computer--has
to be Windows NT, version 4.0--and then you tell me to tell it
what system you want to look at. Meanwhile, if I set these standard
parameters just so! (demonstrates) we gain total access
to that other system. Total. As in God mode. Maybe better. Cant
even be detected except by a packet sniffer--and only then if
the sniffer knows what to look for, which we certainly wont
allow. Theres no protection, none, if you can get on their
LAN, and not much if the Firewall protecting the LAN is running
on an NT system.
PANACEA
Im sorry. It isnt obvious to me how this is useful.
HYPATIA
We were just discussing how corporate interests kept dangerous
ideas confined and quarantined.
PANACEA
Yes.
HYPATIA
But all corporations use computers to communicate, and 90% of
them use the Microsoft operating system which, by way of
Captain Goober here, becomes the unofficial publisher of your
work.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Nothing to it! Give me a couple of minutes and I can own, I mean
OWN, any NT system out there.
PANACEA
NT?
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Or win98 or 2000, for that matter. If I cared. Read anything.
Write anything. Add anything. CHANGE anything. Sys Admin password,
gone, then changed, then hidden, in only a little longer than
it takes to say it can be done.
HYPATIA
Thanks to Bill Gates and his minions, your blurbs and manifestos,
speeches and papers, graphs and flow charts, will pop unpredictably
onto computer screens everywhere.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Workers and bosses, high and low.
PANACEA
I never thought of business people as receptive.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
First rule of business: anythings more interesting than
what youre getting paid to do.
HYPATIA
In a spam this size, even the statistical norm is a hell of lot
of converts.
PANACEA
Id rather get to students. Theyre more open-minded.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Students! Students are even easier!
PANACEA
What are you doing?
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Looking into my zoo, here.
HYPATIA
The Captain has quite an arsenal.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Let's see: naw, not that one.
PANACEA
Where did you find him?
HYPATIA
The Internet, of course.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Ah ha! Here we go! A mutating Melissa that hasn't been caught
yet.
HYPATIA
Ripe for student communication.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Tag a zipped message on to it? Why not, at least for email. Dear
Parents, send money, join Pantopia.
PANACEA (to HYPATIA)
He thinks this is a joke.
HYPATIA (laughing)
One of the best ever, darling!
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Now, for the serious, the research surfers, better to throw in
a live hyperlink that links to a page we'll drop on a couple of
servers at Whoosis College. Setting a trap.
PANACEA
A trap for what?
CAPTAIN GOOBER
It FTPs our stuff on top of theirs.
PANACEA
But these places must have defenses against that.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Oh, surethats what makes it fun! We kick it at 3AM
and it won't be spotted until seven or eight, most likely, and
by then it will be spread to half a dozen other college nets--plus
some .COMs. Thats before the narcs even figure out what's
happening, much less crack it.
HYPATIA
Goober can hack cable, too.
PANACEA
But I tell my people to turn off their TV sets! Until the revolution
HYPATIA
Until the revolution, TV is the only way to reach the unwired
electorate.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
People are way too busy to read.
HYPATIA
And too alienated to organize.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Which is why every politicians a tool of corporate interests.
PANACEA
If people are too numb and dumb to notice whats going on,
I dont know that it makes sense to reach out to them.
HYPATIA
They notice what matters to them its just that very
little that matters to them makes it past the corporate censors.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Mental fire walls work better than electronic ones. I can crash
the electronic.
HYPATIA
You can crash the mental.
PANACEA
But I have! I am.
HYPATIA
Youve had great success on one segment of the Web.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Your Fantasy plan is brilliant. In the world of gaming, Pantopia
rules!
HYPATIA
But my inquires indicate that role players turn inward.
CAPTAIN GOOBER Like hackers.
HYPATIA
Each one wants to convert just enough people to be their Significant
Others.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
For the rest, use NPCs.
HYPATIA
Propagation has hit the wall.
PANACEA
But the Plan! Like L Ron Hubbard, I create a system in which people
can self-realize. We build a parallel universe, reach critical
mass
HYPATIA
Too small! A niche market!
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Scientology and like that? Only needs to suck in enough money
to feed itself.
HYPATIA
Dont think were disparaging. Improving life for your
converts is a glorious accomplishment.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Even if only Virtual.
HYPATIA
But once global warmings exponential
CAPTAIN GOOBER
All that can stop it is World Dictatorship. Or mass ecological
conversion.
HYPATIA
Our model was too sanguine. Clark and Asimov inspired the nerds
who grew up to invent the technology, yes. But vision? Without
reconfiguring, the human spirit peters out in Space Junk and UFOlogy.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Hack for the sake of hack.
HYPATIA
You must re-target ordinary people, with ordinary human truth.
PANACEA
Human truth, yes. But cosmic truth? The ordinary person isnt
prepared.
HYPATIA
Just speak simply, youll reach the cucooners on their couches.
Theyll hear the sincerity in your voice
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Like they care. Like simple and sincere dont finish last.
HYPATIA
Its a sound so rare that it may take a while for it to register.
But they will know right away that you are not for sale. You dont
want anybodys money. Thats capitalistically unthinkable.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Because your air time will be free, your speech will be free.
For once. Itll blow their minds!
HYPATIA
Your message--,
CAPTAIN GOOBER
and your beautiful face--,
HYPATIA
--will replace millions and billions of dollars worth of advertising,
thanks to Goober.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Youll be more famous than David Letterman or the Beatles
or Jesus Christ.
PANACEA
You can really do this?
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Sure can. Thanks to Bill.
PANACEA
And Microsoft or the networks or the FCC cant stop you?
HYPATIA
They havent a clue.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Well, they do have a clue, sort of. Yeah, I announced it once.
What I could do. But everybody said I couldnt.
HYPATIA
Goober believes that the corporations are so arrogantly self-involved
that threats are never passed up the line.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Everythings public relations.
HYPATIA
he same filter that blocks your message.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
The only thing that gets through Bills alligator hide is
a worldwide pie in the face demonstration.
PANACEA
Like what?
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Like
HYPATIA
The Captain had an earlier plan
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Never mind. Lucky I failed my first try, cause this is a thousand
times better!
PANACEA
What do you mean, you failed?
HYPATIA
The Captains original impulse was pure and pointless. All
he wanted was to personally hack into Microsoft.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Can you believe it!? I was so pissed I wasnt thinking!
PANACEA
Wasnt thinking about..??
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Microsofts firewall runs on a Unix box! Whod have
guessed?
PANACEA
I dont understand.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
If Id tried to crack that Id have ended up in jail.
My hardware sold to Podunk Public Library.
HYPATIA
Fortunately, I was able to offer the Captain the perfect opportunity.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Plus the shield of The First Amendment.
HYPATIA
To hitch his revenge to our noble cause.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Thanks to Bills voracious market share, just about everybody
else is vulnerable. Hitting them is the best way to hit Bill!
PANACEA
But just hitting Bill
HYPATIA
Hes The Evil Empire. Hitting him serves freedom everywhere.
Right, Goober?
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Right! As right can be!
PANACEA
I dont see how
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Hypatia says youve got wired disciples, dozens or maybe
even hundreds. With the computer skills to follow my directions
and strike world wide within minutes.
PANACEA
Yes. I think my followers can do that.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
God, what a wonderful mess!
PANACEA
I dont regard the broadcast of my message as a mess.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
I mean a good mess. Chaos in the ranks.
HYPATIA
A wake-up call.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
All those fat cats who think they are in control get a good lesson:
a stunning, smashing, shape-shifting lesson in Intellectual Anarchy!
PANACEA
Anarchy which will be followed rapidly by a reordering in Pantopean
peace and love.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Unless they catch us.
PANACEA
But they will. Wont they?
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Hypatia says your sacrifice
HYPATIA
You carry out your end, Panacea will inspire the people. The people
will protect us against reprisals.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Maybe. Maybe not. Either way, itll be worth it.
HYPATIA
What date are we to shoot for?
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Cant be too soon to suit me. Theres always an off
chance that the bastards will get wind, and work out precautions.
PANACEA
A week? A year?
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Is ten days all right?
HYPATIA
Panacea?
PANACEA
Whats to be done?
HYPATIA
Mostly filming TV spots, I would think. Your writings and Web
Page are pretty much ready to go.
PANACEA
You think it can be accomplished in ten days--?
HYPATIA
At my age, its now or never!
CAPTAIN GOOBER
At my age, too!
PANACEA
Then I say, strike! And may the Goddess prosper us!
HYPATIA
Well want preliminary instructions by day after tomorrow.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
Right! Youve got it. Jeesus, Id better get back to
my office. Ive got a lot of work to do. If were going
to make this thing really big.
HYPATIA
The biggest ever.
CAPTAIN GOOBER
All right! Bigger than a billion dot coms!
HYPATIA
The real time version of Y2K! (exit)
PANACEA
You think this is possible?
HYPATIA
Goobers trick? Yes.
PANACEA
It will work?
HYPATIA
It will make your face and a shorthand version of your ideas familiar
to every household in America, and to billions elsewhere. Yes.
PANACEA
Goddess be praised, then. Its a miracle!
HYPATIA
Instant messaging. But it wont take long for Microsoftor
some brilliant eager outsider to crack Goobers cracking.
Thats your fifteen minutes of fame.
PANACEA
Then whats the point? If were all in jail--?
HYPATIA
No point. Unless during your window of opportunity you take some
really spectacular measures to make your message into Myth.
PANACEA
Truth and love is better than myth. People will understand.
HYPATIA
Will they?
PANACEA
They have so far.
HYPATIA
People on the margins. Who fall through the cracks.
PANACEA
Young people. Women.
HYPATIA
Yes! Thats my point.
PANACEA
If only all the Alphas would go off some where, off-planet. Run
themselves a perpetual top gun tournament and leave the rest of
us alone!
HYPATIA
How can one be an Alpha without the rest of the alphabet bringing
up the rear?
PANACEA
By love. Radical love.
HYPATIA
Love is the answer, eh?
PANACEA
Yes. Love.
HYPATIA
Love for such people is foreign territory. But being IN love,
with an immortal beauty
.. with you.
PANACEA
Me?
HYPATIA
With certain digital enhancements.
PANACEA
You mean my image?
HYPATIA
The being who is free from material motivation. A being of pure
love. Even Goober responds to that, and hes terrified of
women.
PANACEA
He is?
HYPATIA
There is nothing that terrifies men the way a free woman does.
It is so out of line with the world that they were born into,
and the world that they have built, that they will see themselves
as reduced by her to helpless babes, infants at the mercy of a
rejecting mother--
PANACEA
Only if they take her seriously.
HYPATIA
Not so.
PANACEA
Why would unbelievers waste--
HYPATIA
Because ideas spread. You aren't much of a practical threat: they
still own everything. But suppose you got to their wives and daughters?
PANACEA
I have already!
HYPATIA
Only a few. They arent worried yet. But when they are--You
know what happened to Silkwood. To the White Rose. To Rosa Luxemborg.
PANACEA
They were killed.
HYPATIA
You were taking a big risk by posting your thought on the Net.
Spreading it slowly, through coffee klatches, or notices taped
up in women's bathrooms Big Brother'd never notice until
you had accumulated enough converts to keep your ideas alive.
But were running out of time, so were putting it on
line, where most of the people with access are men. Mainly the
worst kinds of men.
PANACEA
How the worst? Engineers and academics--
HYPATIA
Uhhuh. Yes. Think science fiction. Cutting edge knowledge doesnt
lead to compassion, but to feelings of entitlement.
PANACEA
Dont I know! Talk about grad school!
HYPATIA
Set in their Darwinian superiority.
PANACEA
Thats why I have been insulted, and threatened, and flamed.
HYPATIA
The ones who have power believe that they hold it by merit. Ordinary
people, women and children, are just a drain. Do you remember
what happened to Lillian Hellmans Julia?
PANACEA
The Nazis came into her house while she slept and killed her for
her ideas.
HYPATIA
Threat is the greatest tribute tyranny can pay to ideas. Your
task is to get the whole world to recognize this, so that no matter
what happens to you, the ideas will live.
PANACEA
Think Joan of Arc, you said.
HYPATIA
Think Joan of Arc.
PANACEA
Prepare for
.
HYPATIA
Prepare for sacrifice.
PANACEA
But how?
HYPATIA
The very first videotape we make must be a plea and a warning.
A last testament, to be distributed to every TV station and aired
after your death.
PANACEA
My will and testament.
HYPATIA
Setting forth your mission and naming your enemies. How you have
given your life for them, the common people. How it will be their
job to carry on what you have begun, so that your enemies who
are also their enemies will not win in the long run.
PANACEA
Yes.
HYPATIA
They must make you immortal.
PANACEA
You, too.
HYPATIA
As your John the Baptist.
PANACEA
If the Goddess wills.
HYPATIA
You, too, will be a Goddess.
PANACEA
If this is part of her Plan.
HYPATIA
It is and was.
PANACEA
You knew?
HYPATIA
You knew, too, Always. But it is only now that you are able to
face what you have always known.
(PANACEA throws herself in HYPATIAs arms.)
PANACEA
I cant! Im too young.
HYPATIA
My Ladys servants are never too young, or too old, too clever
or too foolish. The task and the tool are sublimely suited. (petting
PANACEA)
PANACEA
Yes. I see.
HYPATIA
Dear daughter. Beloved.
PANACEA
Are you pleased that you have made me see?
HYPATIA
I am.
PANACEA:
Hypatia
HYPATIA
This knowledge is a pain beyond any we have known. But we are
together now, as we have never been before. We are one with Her,
my child.
THE END
